Red Lantern Corps

An organization of super-villains led by Atrocitus.

Description[]

The Red Lantern Corps has a large number of members drawn from many alien races and they all wear similarly colored red-and-black costumes with a common, shared symbol on the chest. These 'Red Lanterns' are always angry, belligerent and vengeful, and their temperament leads them to argue amongst themselves, so that their leader Atrocitus has to maintain order by instilling fear. Their motives are ambiguous, as in one story they intend to invade the Earth but in another they are prepared to ally with the Justice League. They are, though, untrustworthy and on two occasions infiltrate the Watchtower by use of deception.

They each use a 'Power Ring' similar to Green Lantern's to project red 'hard light' constructs and are usually surrounded by an 'aura' that must protect them from harm as well as allowing them to breathe in space. We know from elsewhere that their 'rage' is the driving force for these rings, but we are not told how the group originated. It is mentioned that a Red Lantern's ring can only be worn by someone who has been "chosen" (by the ring?) and is worthless to anyone else. An unworn ring can cause a hypnotic desire to obtain it in someone nearby. They are able to perform interstellar travel by hijacking the 'Boom Tube' technology of the Watchtower.

They have an unexplained association with Lobo.
